The many health benefits of walking were further proven today as the generous proceeds from a recent sponsored walk were presented to a local children’s cancer charity.
A cheque for £4,000 was handed to David Wood, chairman of the North of England Children’s Cancer Research (NECCR), at Blagdon Hall, where the event took place earlier this year.
Mr Wood said, “The walk was a fantastic success, we spent a beautiful day walking around the exclusive Blagdon Estate in Northumberland thanks to the kind permission of Viscount and Vicountess Ridley – to have raised so much money as a result of that is extremely gratifying”
“The event calendar for NECCR gets busier with every year and the money raised to support the research into the causes of children’s cancer, as well as it’s treatment, is always gratefully received.”
“I‘d like to say a huge thank you for the fantastic support from local walkers and friends of the charity and I hope the walk continues to grow in popularity.”
The second annual Children’s Cancer Walk, which took pace in September welcomed more than 250 walkers who enjoyed six miles of picturesque scenery through one of the biggest private estates in the northeast.
For the second year running, respected writer and friend of the charity, Bill Bryson joined the walk to the delight of many a local fan.
Tickets for the walk were sold at £10 with all proceeds to the NECCR fund and walkers raised sponsorship to reach a total of £4000 that will directly benefit children with cancer in the northeast.
NECCR is based at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University and Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). The charity fund support vital research into both the causes and treatment various children’s cancers.
