CHILDREN’S CANCER RUN, NEWCASTLE  – POSTPONEMENT TO 23RD MAY 2021

It is with great regret that the NECCR have taken the difficult decision to postpone the Children’s Cancer Run for the 2nd time this year and move it back to our ‘normal time of year’ next year – to the 23rd May 2021.

With many other key regional and national sporting events being cancelled in September, and much uncertainty still created by COVID-19, it is in the best interests of all participants, volunteers, supporters, staff and all other stakeholders that we have made this decision.

If you have already registered, your registration will automatically carry over to 2021.

2020 CHILDREN’S CANCER RUN, NEWCASTLE UPDATE

Usually at this time of the year we are sharing all of the fantastic photos from Children’s Cancer Run day, sharing with you lovely memories of what is a very special day in the North East calendar of events. As you know, we have had to put everything on hold this year and, like so many areas of our lives, we cannot be certain about what the next few months hold.

We currently hope to bring you the 2020 Children’s Cancer Run on Sunday 20th September and are closely watching developments as lockdown is eased. We cannot be certain that this will be possible, or what the run will look like if it does go ahead.

We will be making a decision about whether to hold the run in September by the end of June and will update you on this as soon as we have further news. In the meantime, we very much appreciate your patience and understanding while we work out our plans.

While raising funds to help find a cure and better treatments for childhood cancers remains our central mission, the safety and wellbeing of our supporters, volunteers, staff and other stakeholders will be at the heart of any decisions we make going forward.

We know that the Children’s Cancer Run holds a very special meaning for many people and we will look forward to bringing it back bigger and better than ever as soon as we are able to do so.

The history

The Children’s Cancer Run came from very small beginnings over 30 years ago. It started through Kings School in Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear in order to raise money for the North of England Children’s Cancer Research fund, as at the time, one of their pupils was suffering from Cancer of the kidney.

This initial idea blossomed, slowly at first… the first run only had a couple of hundred people from Kings School.

A volunteer committee was set up to manage the organisation of the run, and today, many of the original members are still volunteering their services. Particularly satisfying and completing a ‘circle’ is the fact that Chris Peacock, the pupil at Kings school who had Cancer of the kidney and who inspired pupils and staff to raise money in the first ‘sponsored’ run is now also chairman of the committee.
